You’re doing it wrong! If you just don’t know what laundry products to use to wash your horse and/or pet wear; so you use laundry detergents you found at your local store, you’ve made the first and biggest mistake. Are you are scratching your head about why “Big Name” horse blanket washes and soaps aren’t working? There’s a reason for that! If you just want the best for your horse and all of your animals, but not sure how to achieve it…we can help.
RugSafe USA, is here to help equestrians, horse owners, animal fanatics, and small animal lovers achieve better and safer results, when washing animal laundry. We too are horse owners, we have dogs and cats, and live the farm life, just like many of our customers and friends. So, we get the frustration of trying to find a safe and pet friendly laundry solution. Because of this, we at RugSafe USA had to breakdown why products aren’t working, what people are doing wrong, and how we can start educating animal lovers (and keep them off forums with really wrong information).
Why Won’t it Work?
Problem with the Products
Because you’re doing it wrong, or is it? First, let us dive into why these “Big Name” horse blanket products or well known laundry detergents do not work for you. 99.9% of the time it is because they are not designed to work on horse blankets, or pet wear; including the capacity of mud, dirt, sweat, grime, manure, urine…you name it. Often times, these products you are using are not equip with the cleaning power to work on these unique fabrics. Sometimes, they are not for horse blankets …even though they charge you a little more and label the product to say “horse”. Household laundry detergents are absolutely NOT for horse blankets, even the free and clear detergents or baby clothes laundry detergents. Detergents add residues, which can irritate an animals skin (just like how they can irritate your skin). They also make waterproofing almost impossible to re-apply, and ruin the factory applied waterproofing, AND deteriorate fabrics!
Why should we as horse owners, spend so much money on the best care for our horses, their clothing, all of our investments, to use a laundry product that was designed for clothing, baby clothes, canvas tents, shoes. None of which ever get as dirty as a horse blanket gets in an hour.
The other thing to consider with these big names, is who is creating these products? Do you know? Do you know where they came from? Would you drive a car that had the tires changed by a 6 year old (no offense to all the 6 year old readers)? Would you buy a saddle for your horse that was made by a brick-layer that has never ridden a horse or seen a saddle? I personally wouldn’t dare. But all those are things to consider. If the creators of your blanket wash aren’t understanding what you need, what is best, how to actually wash a horse blanket or pet wear…why would you believe it works? So therefore, many of the issues you are having, are not your fault!
Problem with the Washing
What we can work to control, are the issues you may be having with the washing process. So here are somethings you may want to consider, or tips you may want to try. One of the most important things is to not over stuff your machine. A question we receive is how to get blanket’s cleaner if there is still dirt that is on the blanket. You may find that your washing machine (or the laundromat’s) machine can fit 3 medium weight blankets. However, you are NOT washing normal clothing. You are washing items that are much more dirty and larger than the majority of normal laundry. Therefore, you may want to only wash 2 at a time. Remember, just because you can fit it in…doesn’t mean you should! Leave space, it will help the dirty water to escape from the blanket during washing cycles.
Add laundry solution according to the dirtiness of the blanket or item, but make sure not to over use. Too much product will leave residue and suds in the blanket or item. Make sure your machine is large enough. While a house machine may be large enough size wise, it may not be strong enough to really agitate the blanket or pet wear as needed. To help getting a blanket cleaner, try “pre-cleaning” by gently brushing off excess or caked on dirt, or even lightly hosing off.
A tip that I like to provide, is to turn your blanket “inside out”. Lay it on the floor with the top of the blanket up, then loosely ball/ fold it up so the liner of the blanket (the side that touches the horse) is now on the outside. Throw it into the washer, set to cold water, turn to bulky setting and wash. The goal is to have that excessively dirty side of the blanket agitate itself to help clean better. For more tips: CHECK HERE!
Why Blanket Safe Works
As mentioned earlier, RugSafe USA looks into why these products aren’t working. We enjoy figuring out what is lacking, and what needs to be better. Fortunately for our customers, we are not only a horse and pet laundry product. We also wash, repair, and care for horse and pet wear professionally. We joined up with a Veterinarian to get help designing a product that is outstanding for our use, as well as safe and gentle for the animal’s delicate skin. Blanket Safe products were born. But what you see on the outside has a lot of thought, care, and love that went into what is on the inside. We considered all aspects of these washes.
Considering All Aspects
Blanket Safe products comply with the specific laundry care labels of the most delicate horse blanket. Occasionally there are factors about Blanket Safe that surprise customers that have always used harsh, fabric deteriorating, waterproof ruining, household laundry detergents. Unlike thick household detergents are full of chemicals that destroy waterproofing, deteriorate fabric, and wash smaller loads; Blanket Safe is a thin product. Blanket Safe pet laundry solutions are made out of high quality, highly concentrated products, and while they are not the same viscosity, they are packed with cleaning power. An important point to consider is that Blanket Safe is NOT a stain fighter. We avoid the use of harsh chemicals, and therefore stains, especially set in stains may not be removed. Another shocker is the light fragrance that does not remain after washing, and the low sudsing formula.
We tried to consider all aspects of not only the laundry, but also the animal. Understanding that animals can be very sensitive to smells, is something that we consider. Therefore, we made sure our product did not leave a strong, or lasting scent. We did not want a product could cause irritation to the animal, including skin irritations. With chemicals, scents, and products in general, residues can be a huge issue. If used as instructed, Blanket Safe products are residue free. That being said, residues may come from product left in the blanket, including suds. Blanket Safe is low sudsing, and many customers will mistake low sudsing for not working. That couldn’t be more false. We want your blanket to get clean by the use of agitation. Just because there are no bubbles does not mean it is not working…it just means your blanket IS scrubbing!
With lots of bubbles, the clothes can form a bubbly layer of cushioning in between them, and if they are gliding instead of rubbing, they won’t be cleaned as well. It is because HE machines were designed around the agitation of fabrics that they also do not use as much water to clean.
As you have probably come to realize, it’s likely that you’re not the one to blame. Using a product like Blanket Safe will help you to get your pet laundry cleaner, a safer and more effective way. Using chemicals and products not designed for horse and pet wear, will not only NOT work, but will leave residues which risk complications, and ruin your very expensive investments. Blanket Safe products on the other hand are designed by a professional pet laundry, and a Veterinarian. They comply with the laundry care labels of even the most specific and delicate item. Safety and effectiveness considerations went into designing each of the washes and products. Our products were originally designed for professionals, but so easy to use that now any equestrian and pet lover can now get the same fantastic results. So, if you are having problems message us, we won’t flat out tell you “You’re doing it wrong”, but we will help you get the best results, and make sure you’re doing it right!
Until next time, wash it right & have a safe ride!
Well friends, I guess we are officially full steam ahead into the new year! So welcome to Blanket Safe 2020! You may have noticed that during the Holiday Season, I took some time off from the blog posts to focus on family, and getting all holiday orders out as quickly as possible. 2020 has a lot in store for us, and we believe that this year will be just as amazing, if not more than in 2019! So, lets discuss some of the things that we loving and some of the things we have planned!
Women in Equestrian Business
First things first, we will be getting back to fan favorite posts focusing on all the amazing women behind the equestrian brands next week! We are super excited. These posts have really picked up, and we are getting lots of emails from brands asking to be a part of this project. Great news is, we will be posting as much as we can, as long as time permits! So if you or any women owned equestrian business are interested, please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, and I will send you the questionnaire. We love supporting other brands, other women, and sharing all the insight and behind the scenes with YOU!
Throughout 2020 we will be making some new initiatives with our Blanket Safe brand. In December you may have received an email giving the details, if you didn’t get an email I recommend you signing up. We only send emails when we have news to share, deals or discounts, or important information. We do not blow up your inbox, trust me I don’t have time to design pointless emails. Also, in signing up, you get $$$ to use on your first purchase, so it is totally worth it. But I digress, the December email described our new 2020 initiatives to be better for the environment, and more environmentally conscious.
To do this, we will be offering a FREE REFILL on 8oz concentrate bottles. (8oz concentrates make 32oz of ready to use solution, you just add the water). To get more information on the Mix It Yourself Sets, check here! Great news, as I am typing this…the Mix-it Yourself Set still comes with FREE SHIPPING! We will also allowing any 32oz ready to use wash purchased from one of our retailers to receive a free refill! Our retailers support us, and we love to support them! Please make sure to check our list of retailers to find one local to you, this list is always expanding! We want our bottles to be reused and would love if you could help us do our part for the environment! To find more information on how to get your FREE REFILL, check here!
Buy a Bottle for a Cause
This Spring 2020 we will be releasing a special bottle! A portion of the proceeds from each purchase of this specific bottle will be donated to this organization. The organization that was chosen will be announced once everything has been finalized. I will say, that it was chosen based off of the suggestions from an Instagram Poll. This wash will have a different look, scent and color from the options we currently have available! They will only be available at blanketsafe.com.
Travels in 2020
We are asked all the time if we will be a vendor at any horse shows during the Spring, Summer and Fall. And the truth is, at this time we have no plans to be. Because one of our main business goals is to support our retailers, we do not want to be in direct competition with any of our retailers, as some of our retailers have mobile units.
We will however be at trade shows throughout the year. Our next one being in about 2 weeks in Philadelphia.
Things we are Loving
We want to thank everyone for all the support! We are loving the fact that customers, bloggers, and other small business like Blanket Safe are doing unpaid reviews, shout outs, before and afters, blog posts. At Blanket Safe, we spend a lot of time supporting and giving shout outs to many of the brands and women business owners we love! We would especially like to thank Barn Laundry of Cape Cod, Bays 4 Days Crochet, and The $900 Facebook Pony. It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a hardcore equestrian community to build an equestrian business, so thank you ladies for all the love!
Another thing I am crushing on right now, and I can’t get off my mind is this…so I thought I would share with you! So the other day I was scrolling through Amazon as I do while waiting for kids to go to sleep, and what did I find? This Gorgeous horse pendant! I love jewelry that is dainty, timeless, and I can wear without thinking it may turn colors! But, I’m not a huge yellow gold fan….I continued to dig and found one that was Sterling Silver for much much cheaper! So, I ordered it! Happy January to me!
So once again, Welcome to Blanket Safe 2020! I hope your 2019 ended with a bang, and your 2020 has gotten off to an awesome start! Don’t forget to take advantage of our free refills and our free shipping on the Mix It Yourself Sets!! Thank you for all the love in 2019, and for your continued support in 2020! Don’t forget to join us next week for another Women in Equestrian Business! Who will it be this time?! I can’t wait to see!
Much Love, and best Wishes for Safe and Happy Rides,
I am so excited to feature this next amazing boss lady in our Women in Equestrian Business post. Melodie Weintraut, like myself is a mom, a girlfriend to her awesome husband and a professional adult amateur. She works her booty off as a professional poultry inspector, and has grown a successful and creative business, Bays4DaysCrochet. PHEW!
I met Melodie a few years ago. Outside of the business world; her positive, realistic, down-to-earth personality was a breath of fresh air! Now my horse is decked out in his gorgeous grey, black and bling bonnet. All of her products are made to order, to match your colors, your horse, and your style. Melodie has such a fun spunky style, this post is sure to relate to you, make you giggle, and/or make you scratch your head. Either way make sure to check her gorgeous pieces of work out at Bays4DaysCrochet, she wont disappoint!
While Melodie waited to land her first “big girl job”; she taught her self to crochet (thanks to YouTube). She took that new found love of crocheting to make her own horse bonnet design. Melodie’s logo however was created by her husband. After a rough day at Grad School, he created this Tim Burton-esque picture of Quincy (her heart horse). After mastering her own pattern, she released Quincy to strut his stuff down the barn aisle…and if you’ve seen the bonnets Melodie creates, it is no wonder that barn friends now had bonnet envy! Melodie’s style is unique and her pattern and logo are 100% her own. She makes that entire bonnet without making a single cut (besides the final cut).
While Melodie claims she isn’t the “typical” people person; she can definitely strike up a connection with pretty much anyone who talks about animals. She loves talking to people who are designing their bonnet, discovering colors they love, what colors bring out the eyes of their chestnut mare, adding personalized ears, and grasping the ideas of what you as a horse owner, lover, and rider would dream of if you are to get a bonnet. However, it wasn’t all horses, unicorns and pink bonnets. Melodie noticed that other creators were pricing themselves very low. However, while Melodie’s prices would not be that low, her prices reflect the hand made work, dedication, and passion that she crochets into every inch of the bonnets she creates.
Melodie realizes that not everyone appreciates the justification of her reasoning, but she believes that while money doesn’t grow on trees, her time, quality and customization doesn’t either. In 5 years, Melodie would love to see some her teens/young adult audience sporting her bonnets at some major shows. “It would be so cool to hop on Facebook Groups, Eventing Nation, etc and seeing a pair going out, being successful, and wearing my product”. But before then, if her amazing bonnets can just continue to pay her monthly feed bill, she will continue to do a happy dance.
About Melodie Weintraut
Melodie, her family and her business are all based on Maryland’s beautiful Eastern Shore #madeinMD. She has always loved horses, however didn’t start riding until she was about 18, her Freshman year of college. Currently she is dancing around the sandbox with her OTTB, Hokie (yes….a good old VT Grad), and Pixie, her 11 year old Oldenburg pony. Along with her 2 equine friends, she raises rabbits, has 3 dogs and 2 cats! Melodie is totally a unique chick, not only is she down to earth, but she is also honest…to a fault. If you don’t want her honest opinion about your horse, don’s ask her for her thoughts #warning.
Let’s Get a Little Personal with Melodie Weintraut
What is something not everyone knows about you? Melodie applied to vet school 15 times, over the course of 3 admission cycles, Not once was she asked to sit for an interview.
What is something you would tell your younger self? “I’d tell myself not to worry so much about things. I used to have anxiety with my old horse, about things that hadn’t happened/things that never came to pass. Looking back, I should have just ridden the horse I had”. Other than that, she would also tell her younger self to not put up with bully trainers.
What mantra you live by? Don’t focusing so much on making a living, that you forget to make a life.
What is the last show you binge watched? “I don’t watch a whole lot of TV, but I am currently listening to Crime Junkie, and Up and Vanished podcasts.”
What is the last book you read? She’s not sure. “Other than baby books for my adorable daughter. Other than that, no clue.”
What is your favorite word? Tedious
What profession other than your own would you attempt for a week? A Veterinarian
What is your favorite food? Wawa Soft Pretzels and Pepsi
How do you take your Coffee? With a LOT of International Delight Creamer #butt-ton
What is something you want people to remember about your brand? There is a real human, mom boss, behind the bonnet that makes your horse looks amazing! Melodie is the only one, crocheting the body, tucking in the ends, sewing on that bling, and cutting out the ears and vinyl, and pressing it on. A real person is messaging you back and forth about time lines so you can get your bonnet in time for your big show.
In Conclusion with Melodie Weintraut of Bays4DaysCrochet
Melodie is no stranger to working hard, facing setbacks, and changing dreams; so she has become used to the idea that maybe the universe is trying to tell her something. Instead of making her dreams a possibility, she makes your bonnet dreams a possibility. She handcrafts and designs each one from scratch and Melodie puts her heart, her love, and her best wishes into each custom bonnet for your horse. Never once has she been afraid of failure, but faced it head on and made a decision to continue on. If you haven’t met Melodie, or seen her designs you are missing out. I can tell you from experience, when putting one of her bonnets on your horse, you will be proud; just like she is with each of her products she mails you with love.
We hope you join us next time for another look inside the life of another woman behind an amazing equestrian brand. Discover her dream and the adventure she has experienced. Until then, find more posts like this one, HERE.

Many of the questions asked are easily answered on BlanketSafe.com, however, let’s dive into some of these questions, and get you answers quickly! If you think of a question that is not here, please contact us. Let us know your question…and you never know, your question may get featured on this page!
How many washes can you get out of a 32oz bottle?
Our washes are done by loads, not by amount of blankets. It is recommended to use 6oz-8oz of wash per load. More or less depending on the amount of blankets being washed in the machine, and amount of soiling. While we say you can use more or less as needed, we never recommend more than 8oz of wash. Therefore, you should get at least 4 loads of wash completed.
As a reference, I only use approximately 4-6oz of soap per laundry load. I am able to wash: 2 average size heavy weights, or 3 average size mediums, or 4-5 average size light weight blankets in the machine at a time. So therefore, I am able to get 5-8 loads of wash done with a 32oz bottle.
How many blankets does a 32oz bottle of Spray-On Water-repellent treat?
It should treat at least 4 blankets. It greatly depends on the size of the blanket you are treating, and since everyone has a range of blanket sizes, it is hard to be specific. Blankets should be freshly clean, and damp (but not soaking wet, as you don’t want your solution running off) when being used. Spray onto the blanket until thoroughly coated, let dry and cure…which may take up to 72 hours to achieve full results. Then store away for the season until ready to use.
Does the Fly Sheet Wash have fly repelling properties?
NO. The fly sheet wash is different than our regular Zesty Lemon wash as it has added natural cleaning boosters. We were able to add these cleaning boosters since fly sheets do not have a water-repelling treatment which we work so hard to protect with our regular washes. Fly sheets are also challenging to get clean, so we have added a natural, gentle dirt cleaning booster made of soy. There are NO peroxides, NO bleaches, NO whiteners, NO “oxygen” powered boosters. Washing in cold water is still recommended, as we recommend with all pet/horse wear. Our fly sheet spray however, is a fly repellent that works by spraying directly onto the fly sheet.
*We have not tested this product on turnout sheets or blankets with waterproofing. While we believe it would be safe, we do not recommend.
What kind of horse or pet wear can I wash?
(Almost) Anything that is washable, by hand or by machine can be washed in Blanket Safe. It can be safely used on fly sheets, horse blankets (stable and turnouts), wraps, boots, washable girths, saddle pads, fly masks, your blankets, fleece and wool, dog beds, your cloths, it can be added to spot cleaners and you can clean your truck carpets. The uses are endless, want to put in a spray bottle and use as a fabric cleaner…go for it.
Once dry, Blanket Safe is considered hypoallergenic. We understand that horses are always trying to prove us wrong, and we always have that one horse that is allergic to the air it breathes, so we like to say “considered” for that one rare horse.
How can I get better results when washing at home?
Check out this article . This quick read will break down how we recommend using Blanket Safe and washing.
How Can I wash my Horse Wear?
You can wash your horse wear by hand or by machine. We find that it works best in an industrial strength machine that can be found at a laundromat. (please be considerate, spray off any excess dirt or mud before using a laundromat). On a positive note, the anti-bacterial properties of Blanket Safe works to clean the machine as well after use.
Some people may chose to wash horse wear by hand, or in a muck tub. I suggest using this awesome tool HERE to help you do that!!
Will my Horse Blanket be Waterproof after using Blanket Safe
Depends on what you consider Waterproof. Blanket Safe products are designed to treat breathable fabrics, and keep those breathable fabrics functioning. We do not use wax or silicone ingredients, so what our products do is coat the individual fiber, rather than coating the entire fabric as a whole (like a shell).
Because blankets are made from breathable fabric, it makes waterproofing VERY Difficult, and pretty impossible if treated with the correct product, and safely. What Blanket Safe products will do is increase the amount of time that a horse blanket can be in the wet before the blanket starts absorbing water. While the top layer may appear wet, most turn out blankets are also equip with an inner waterproof barrier to help slow the process. Blanket Safe products will help to keep that barrier intact as well. We like to relate the waterproofing of a horse blanket, to that of a fire door. A fire door is NOT fireproof, but it will increase the amount of time you have to get out in an emergency situation, before that door is engulfed.
The next of our Women in Equestrian Business will not disappoint! I am so excited not only about this wonderful lady, but I sing the praises about this product daily! By the end of this post I hope you feel that you personally know Cheryl Dauphin, just as much as you will recognize her colorful, vibrant, and perfect barn and home tool!
At the beginning of 2018, I personally met Cheryl and her made-by-hand products. Since then they have not only been a staple in our barn for all of our horses….but also in our home AND in my business. The EquiGroomers often have a way of wandering off in the business (it just so happens that most of the awesome ladies that work with me, also have horses, dogs, cats, rabbits too!) Cheryl has also changed the way my pets and animals view grooming time.
About THE EquiGroomer
After Cheryl Dauphin retired as independent graphic designer, she decided to devote her time to her horse and improving her riding skills. In doing so, she realized her horse’s skin was very sensitive to the large teeth of a shedding tool. Shedding stones work for a little while, but Cheryl realized they did not last long, and were really messy. This left Cheryl in a predicament…but not for long! Tenaciously she came up with a prototype of the EquiGroomer and also eventually designed the logo. She tried it on her horse with great success and allowed other lucky barn members to try it too.
What makes this product completely unique, (and why it has been such a hit around our home, barn, and business) is that Cheryl has designed this tool to be similar to how a cat’s tongue grooms fur. The blade itself does not remove hair by friction or pulling hair out. In fact, the little teeth only remove scaly, dead hairs. Plus, the teeth of this blade are so petite that they do not actually touch the skin. Yet they are still long enough to bring the natural oils found at the root of the hair, up through the hair to help with coat and fur heath. The groomer’s colors are bright and cheerful. The wooden handle is painted with 3 coats of exterior grade paint making it impervious to bacteria, and an epoxy finish is applied to the blade which wards off rust and prevents dulling.
It is clear that Cheryl has taking all efforts to make the EquiGroomer tools the epitome of perfection. While Cheryl thoroughly enjoys showing off her products, describing the benefits, demonstrating the use, and connecting with customers….selling is not her strong suit. Cheryl mentions she does not enjoy cold calling or making sales over the phone, which frankly is not that uncommon! However, what makes up for that, is a schedule that she loves. She balances time manufacturing and her business related tasks, with her time in the barn. Cheryl has been in business for slightly over 5 years, and in that time has designed her brand to focus on customer satisfaction, quality of products, and happy pets. She feels that there is no need to change that for the next happy 5 years.
About Cheryl Dauphin
Cheryl and her business headquarters are located in Glastonbury Connecticut, and her products are manufactured locally. Labels, wrapping, and shipping of the EquiGroomer are all done by hand by Cheryl. She also finds time to juggle marketing and customer relations, all before heading to the barn. While it may be hard to pick favorites, Cheryl’s favorite is the 5″ EquiGroomer. It has made so many pet owners live’s easier and so many fur babies happier during grooming time. We asked Cheryl when she first fell in love with horses. It turns out, there wasn’t a time where she lacked the fascination and desire to ride.
Her mother recently discovered an old slide of Cheryl on the back of a horse, she was probably about 3 years old at the time. As a child, she took many summer vacations to her grandparents in Maine, and she would beg for the neighbors to pony her around on their horse. The first books she remembers reading are Misty of Chincoteague and Black Beauty. There is no exact time when the passion began, but the journey continues with her 12 year old registered Holsteiner, Clifford. This show jumper is now enjoying his retired life and lighter riding after an injury, but that doesn’t get Cheryl down. Optimist Cheryl welcomed the change of pace, and now she and Clifford enjoy trail rides and spending relaxing days together.
Let’s Get a Little Personal with Cheryl Dauphin
What is something not everyone knows about you? I love being the center of attention, but if given the option of going to a party OR relaxing on the couch…I would choose the latter!
What is something you would tell your younger self? Don’t worry so much about what others think of you, what is really important is how you think of yourself! Too much time is wasted on things that don’t truly matter.
What is a Mantra you live by? Don’t sweat the small stuff!
What was the last show you binge watched? American Pickers…don’t ask why I find that show so entertaining. I sat through what may have been 4 hours of repeats and still enjoyed watching it!
What is the last book you read? Twelve Years a Slave
What’s your favorite word? Indeed
What profession other than your own would you attempt for a week? I’ve tried a number of things in the past, everything from retail sales, landscape designer, even seminar instructor. However, I think I would love to try to be a Pet Adoption Coordinator at a no kill shelter.
What is your favorite food? Popcorn, Popcorn, Popcorn! If I had my choice I would eat it for dinner….every day of the week, I would! I love Popcorn!
How do you take your Coffee? I take my morning Starbuck’s Espresso black with one Splenda.
What is something you want people to remember about your brand? Each EquiGroomer or WaterWisk is assembled by hand, made locally, and uses the highest quality materials available. I hand label and wrap each one, and I am solely responsible for customer relations, shipping, marketing. There is pride and love that goes into each EquiGroomer. It makes me feel even better when I know that every “hooman” that uses the brush on their animals is not only improving the grooming experience, but also increasing the quality time they spend with their pets.
In Conclusion with Cheryl Dauphin of EquiGroomer
We have really enjoyed getting to know Cheryl, and learning about the outpouring of positivity and love that goes into her life and products. It is amazing how similar we all are regardless of background, jobs, or location. In learning more about these awesome ladies, it reminds me that we are all in this equestrian world together! Like I mentioned before, at Blanket Safe we use these products daily for not only horse and pet grooming, but also removing excess hair from saddle pads and fleece. Frankly, next time I pick up my EquiGroomer or WaterWisk, I will have more appreciation of the time, care, love, and passion that went into it!

Over the course of a week, I get many messages asking “How can I get my horse blankets cleaner?” or “How can I get better results?” So let’s discuss ways you can get your horse blankets cleaner! First, have you checked out this post on how we suggest caring for your horse blankets and pet wear? If not, check it out HERE but make sure you come back to finish this one too! If you have read that, and you’re still scratching your head…keep reading.
Best Ways to get your Pet Wear Cleaner
Wash your pet wear as soon after your pet wear is soiled or removed for the season. Leaving urine, mud, and grime set into fabrics only makes it harder to remove residues once dry. Also, leaving urine and mud on a horse blanket will only degrade the fabric AND the factory applied waterproofing. If weather is still not steady, try hosing off dirt, manure, grime. Then wash when weather is steady enough to fully wash, waterproof and put away for the season.
Use a washing machine that is large enough and strong enough. If your machine isn’t large enough or strong enough for your horse wear to move, and scrub , you’re not going to get it super clean. There needs to be enough space in the machine for your horse wear or pet wear to move around and allow water and soap to get into all the folds, as well as to allow all the water and soap to escape. A good hint that the machine may be too small, or over crowded is if you notice marbling or streaks of dirt that remain after washing. Try washing off your horse wear with a hose and a gentle scrub brush before washing in a household machine.
If you notice stains before washing, or have spots that did not come clean. Rewashing is typically not needed if your machine is strong and large enough. But even if your horse wear is getting washed as soon as possible…sometimes stains or tough spots are inevitable. If you have known stains, make sure you pre-treat the spot with a little soap, scrub it in and let it sit for a few minutes. If, when you remove an item you find that you have marks, try applying soap to the area while wet, scrub, and wash before it dries. It is important to know that we do not consider Blanket Safe a stain fighter. Many of the harsh chemicals in normal detergents or stain fighters have been removed from our products to allow them to be safe for the waterproofing, and animal. Try pre-treating or re-treating, gentle scrubbing and washing/rewash.
Dirt remaining in webbing nooks and stitching. In the grand scheme of things this isn’t a big deal. However to get these areas cleaner or whiter on some of the webbing there are somethings that can be done. Usually, a gentle power washing of the binding, webbing, or straps will work to remove any ground in dirt, grime and manure. **Please note, this is not a suggestion to power wash the entire blanket. Doing so may ruin fabric and waterproofing.
